VISITOR CENTER
UNESCO World Heritage Regensburg Visitor Centre – Lighting design for a floating exhibition
As part of World Heritage Day, the new visitor centre in the Salzstadel opens its doors
An extraordinary visitor center was created in the heart of Regensburg's old town, impressively conveying the history and significance of this UNESCO World Heritage site. For the spatially and visually remarkable exhibition – conceived by the renowned Ulm-based firm Bertron Schwarz Frey – Fischer & Partner Lichtdesign developed a finely tuned lighting concept that harmonizes architecture, content, and atmosphere.
Floating exhibition – architecture solved by light
The entire exhibition structure was implemented as a free-floating structure within the space—suspended from the historic ceiling, without contact with the floor. This visionary concept was accentuated by the strategic use of indirect, warm-white lighting. The light lends the structure a sense of lightness, making it appear almost to float in the space.
Particularly impressive: The originally very large and dark storage room was given an almost sunny yet shady feel by the light – warm, soft, and full of depth. The light not only shapes the exhibition, but transforms the entire space into an atmospheric experience.
Display cases and city history in detail
Numerous display cases are integrated into the exhibition walls, presenting various aspects of Regensburg's city history. These are equipped with precise, glare-free lighting to clearly visualize the contents without disrupting the overall effect of the space. The lighting deliberately follows the dramatic structure of the exhibition.
